Service Leads to a Better Education

Just like the business world, the branches of the military rely on a constant stream of willing and motivated people to fill its ranks.  One way that these military branches have encouraged people to join, both past and present, is with the offer of scholarships and the promise that the structure found in the military will prepare those who join with the needed experience to survive both in the battlefield and the boardrooms.  With the incentive of a military college scholarship some may find serving their country to be an honorable and lucrative endeavor.  Though the service branches offer a number of different scholarships for a variety of different fields, these are just a few.

Navy: Nurse Candidate Program

One career that is always needed, both in the service branches and civilian arena, is that of healthcare professionals.  The Nurse Candidate Program provides up to $34,000 to put towards paying tuition for nursing school.  This sum includes a grant of $10,000 and $1,000 month stipends that can extend for 24 months while working towards a nursing degree.  This military college scholarships program also includes full military benefits, the luxury of not having to wear a navy uniform, no drilling requirements, and no service obligation until the time of graduation.  After graduation participants of this program will be commissioned to the Navy Nurse Corps as an officer.

National Guard: 100% Assistance Program

If you’re worried about being shipped off to some far-flung war-torn part of the world, then perhaps serving in the National Guard may be more favorable.  With a commitment to education the National Guard offers military college scholarships as well.  With their 100% Assistance Program, prospective students can earn up to $20,000 a year for up to 4 years, in addition to having access to other programs such as the Montgomery G.I. Bill which gives prospective students a $333 monthly stipend to put towards materials and college expenses for up to 3 years.  In addition to helping prospective students earn an associates, bachelors, or masters degree, those who enroll in the program will also earn a National Guard paycheck.

Army: ROTC Scholarship

The Army is perhaps the best known branch of the military when it comes to offering scholarships.  With their ROTC Scholarship program, students can exchange their services to the military for monetary assistance for college.  These ROTC Scholarships are not awarded based on financial need but are based on a student’s grades and merit.  This program covers full tuition costs or, depending on time left to complete the degree, two-, three-, or four-year scholarships.  In addition to this the ROTC program provides monthly stipends to students, which range from $300 to $500 a month depending on what level of the program a student is at.

Air Force: ROTC Scholarship

Much like the Army the Air force also offers ROTC scholarship programs.  One of the programs within the Air Force ROTC Program is the Professional Officer Course – Early Release Program in which active duty Air Force personnel can pursue a commission.  In order to take part in these programs, applicants must sign a contract stating that their separation from duty will result in becoming a full-time college student.  This is only available for those looking to earn an undergraduate degree and upon completion graduates will return to active duty and will be commissioned as a second lieutenant.

Going To School Doesn’t Have To Be Like Pulling Teeth

Getting into the school of your choice can be a pain.  After filling out all the applications, getting recommendations from past teachers, and buying supplies, the thought of moving away from home can be stressful.  Even more imposing than all this is how you’re going to pay for it all.  Tuition rates are sky rocketing, so even if you get accepted by the school of your choice, the biggest hurdle may be paying for it.  Luckily for aspiring future dentists, there is a number of dental school centric scholarships offered that can make it less like pulling teeth and more like a gentle cleaning.  Below are just a few of the many scholarships for the aspiring dentist.

The American Dental Association

Leading the charge in providing dental scholarships is the ADA.  Though the number of scholarships offered by the ADA varies depending on the funds available, the ADA still offers a number of awards that help aspiring dentists reach their goal.  These dental scholarships include Dental Student Scholarship, Underrepresented Minority Dental Student Scholarship, Dental Hygiene Scholarship, Dental Laboratory Scholarship, and the Dental Assisting Scholarship.  The monies awarded are directly transferred to the student financial office and are to be used to alleviate such costs as tuition, materials, room and board, and other fees.

National Dental Association Foundation Scholarship

This dental scholarship is offered by the National Dental Association (NDA) for underrepresented minorities.  This particular scholarship is available for those in their freshman year, or equivalent, pre-doctoral studies, and post-doctoral awards which awards up to $10,000.  In order to qualify for these, students must maintain a 3.5+ GPA, are legal US citizens, provide evidence of volunteer or community service experience, and provide a letter of acceptance from a dean of students and a letter of recommendation from an undergraduate professor.

Colgate Scholarships

It is no surprise that Colgate offers dental school scholarships.  It should also not come as a surprise that they offer more than 20 scholarships and fellowship programs.  The Colgate-Palmolive and the Hispanic Dental Association Foundation Scholarship is just one that Colgate offers.  This awards up to $10,000 for those who are looking to further their education in the field of dentistry as well as building a stronger community.  This award, as implied by the name, is only available to US citizens of Hispanic decent.

Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship

This dental scholarship is for those who are looking to support both their country and their local community.  This scholarship provides students with funds to pay for tuition, room and board, supplies, and more.  Should one choose to receive this, the recipient is obligated to serve for every year of aid received with a minimum of 3 years of active duty.  This is annually awarded from any of the service branches.

National Health Service Corp. Scholarship Program

Much like the Armed Forces Health Professions Scholarship, the NHSC Scholarship requires all who accept it to serve two years providing oral health care services in areas that are deemed under-served.  This program provides prospective students with funds to pay for tuition, books, supplies, room and board.

When Tuition Starts to Add Up

Math plays a central role in life.  We use math everyday from calculating multimillion dollar business accounts to how much water you need to add into your oatmeal for breakfast.  For most, they don’t even realize how often they use it, and for others, it’s a source of income.  While a natural talent in math can take you far, there is sometimes a need for accounting scholarships to help make a career out of it.  When applying to college, even the most stalwart mathematician can be overwhelmed with the cost of tuition.  If the numbers don’t seem to add up, then a scholarship may be the only thing that can help balance the scales.

Women in Transition Scholarship

It was long held that men were naturally better at math than women.  That long held belief is now known to be just another stereotype.  But just like men, women too sometimes need help making the numbers add up.  The Women in Transition Scholarship offered by the Educational Foundation for Women in Accounting can help.  This accounting scholarship is offered to women looking to earn a bachelor’s degree in the field of the accounting and are the primary source of income in their home.  Those women who are awarded this will receive up to $16,000 over 4 years to put towards making that dream a reality.

Rattan L. Khosa Scholarship

Kashmiri Pandit and Hindu students who choose to attend the University Of Chicago Booth School Of Business are eligible for this annually awarded accounting scholarship.  Students who are chosen for this scholarship are awarded between $4,000 and $10,000 to put towards furthering their education.  In order to qualify for this award, students must apply and secure their spot at the University Of Chicago Booth School of Business.  Prospective students who were displaced from the Kashmir valley after 1990 will be given priority.

AICPA John L. Carey Scholarship

The goal of this accounting scholarship is to provide financial assistance for those pursuing graduate studies in accounting and the CPA designation.  This scholarship awards $5,000 a year and is available for students who have attained a bachelor’s degree in liberal arts or another non-business related field, and have not earned more than 12 credits during these undergraduate studies.  Other requirements include being accepted, or in the process of being accepted, into an accounting graduate program.  Prospective students must also provide proof that they are intending to become a CPA.

Furman University Liberty Scholarship

This is an annually awarded renewable accounting scholarship for those who intended to pursue a major in accounting, business administration, economics, computer science, mathematics, and information technology.  This scholarship awards up to $8,000, and the recipient is chosen through a competition.

Breaking News for Journalism Scholarships

Journalists play a central role in modern society; they keep the general population informed and up-to-date on what’s going on around them.  They bring us the news every morning, noon, and night.  They feed us a cornucopia of information from what the weather is going to be like over the weekend, as well as coverage on conflicts more than half a world away.  They bring an endless supply of information and perspectives on what is going on in the world.  With so much competition in the field and rising tuition costs, gaining access to a journalism scholarship can give aspiring writers and globetrotters an opportunity to achieve their goal of bringing the world the latest news.

AWSM Scholarship/Internship

Whoever said that sports aren’t for women are seriously mistaken.  The Association for Women in Sports Media annually offers journalism scholarships to women who are pursuing an undergraduate or graduate degree in sports journalism.  This journalism scholarship program has allowed for over a 100 women to pursue opportunities at such publications and networks as ESPN, Sports Illustrated, and MLB.com.  For those interested in this program, applicants applying must be female and full-time students pursuing a sports journalism undergraduate or graduate degree.  Let it be noted that half of the scholarship money will be awarded at the beginning of the internship, while the other half is granted upon the completion of the program.

Robin Roberts/WBCA Broadcasting Scholarship

This is an annually awarded journalism scholarship offered to senior female collegiate basketball players who are looking to continue their education or pursue a career in sports communication or journalism.  This onetime scholarship awards $4,000.  Criteria for this include a letter of recommendation from a collegiate coach, involvement in campus and community events and activities, athletic honors, information on GPA, and proof of a journalism or sports communication major.

Council for International Cooperation/Anna Chennault Scholarship

This journalism scholarship is available to graduating Asian students looking to pursue a career in journalism.  This program provides students with a full-ride scholarship as well as an all expense paid trip to the Unity: Journalists of Color convention in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Washington Post High School Writing Seminar and Scholarship Program

As the name suggests, this program is available to high school students in the D.C. area looking to pursue an education and career in journalism.  This program involves students hearing from writers and contributors of the Washington Post and seminars on writing.  At the conclusion of this program, participants are required to write a news report on a topic.  These are then critiqued and judged, the best two receiving the scholarship.  The two top students will receive a $2,500 award.

The William B. Ruggles Right to Work Scholarship

The William B. Ruggles Right to Work Scholarship is offered by the National Institute for Labor Relations and Research.  This journalism scholarship offers students who are enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate journalism program $2,000 towards their studies.

Learning to Soar Through Scholarships

Traveling by plane may be considered one of the safest ways to travel but for people who dream of flying the marvelous machines the journey can be dangerous, at least financially.  For those who dream of soaring through the skies there are aviation scholarships and grants that help get things aloft.  There are a number of organizations out there that can provide prospective students with the opportunity to take advantage of a number of scholarships.

Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarships

Named after one of the most well known pilots in US history, and perhaps the world, the Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarships focuses on helping women further their training and academic career in the fields of aviation and aerospace.  These scholarships are aimed at helping female pilots complete additional pilot certificates, improve ratings, advance college educations, and aid in gaining additional technical training.  Monetarily the Amelia Earhart Memorial Scholarship Fund holds over $4 million which is used to fund these aviation scholarships and grants.  These include the New Pilot Awards, Flight Training Scholarship, Jet Type Rating Scholarship, and others.

LeRoy W. Homer Jr. Scholarship

This is an annually award scholarship for students looking to enter the aviation field.  It is available to both men and women and provides financial aid to the recipients.  Applicants must be between the ages of 16 and 23 and must be enrolled/enrolling in a college or university that offers aviation course or for those who are pursuing a private pilot license.  Applicants who are involved in extracurricular activities as well as active members of the community while maintaining scholastic standings will be considered first.

Astronaut Scholarship Foundation

Aviation does not stop with just the skies, but extends into space which is where the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation comes in.  Established by more than 80 astronauts from varying missions, the Astronaut Scholarship Foundation offers aviation scholarships and grants for students who aim for the stars.  The ASF offers 25 scholarships, each amounting to $10,000, to students looking to pursue careers in the field of aerospace.  Members of the ASF include Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, Al Worden, and James Lovell to name just a few.

Crocker Snow Instrument Scholarship

This scholarship was established in 1999 in the memory of Crocker Snow.  This aviation scholarship awards between $1,000 and $2,000 to students looking to pursue advanced instrument training.  This scholarship is funded by the Snow family in conjunction with ACONE.

Harrison Ford Scholarship

Young people looking to pursue or further their education in the field of aviation can thank Harrison Ford for establishing this aviation scholarship.  Offered by the EAA Young Eagles, for which Ford was a chairman, this scholarship allows students to pursue a career in aviation no matter what skill level they are starting out at.  The EAA also offers over 30 other scholarships to help aspiring young people attain their dream of becoming a pilot.

John M. Ford Memorial Award

This scholarship was created to memorialize John M. Ford who taught for many years at Clemson University. This civil engineering scholarship is awarded to students who excel and show true talent in the field of civil engineering and wish to pursue it in a professional capacity.  Other civil engineering scholarships offered by Clemson include the Sherwood E. Liles Engineering Scholarship, Polly H. & Walter Lowry Memorial Scholarship, Kenneth D. Hobbs Endowment Scholarship, and more.

Bechtel Foundation Scholarship

One of the civil engineering scholarships offered by the Society of Women Engineers is available to sophomores, juniors, and seniors pursuing an education in civil engineering.  This is awarded to two women with each amounting to $1,400.  Applicants must be members of the Society of Women Engineers and maintain a GPA of 3.0+.  Others offered by the Society of Women Engineers include the General Electric Women’s Network, ITT Scholarship, the Elizabeth McLean Memorial Scholarship, and others.

AWS Arsham Amirikian Engineering Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in the field of civil engineering.  It is awarded annually and is available to those who are 18 years of age and up, maintains a GPA of 3.0+, are high school graduates, provide proof of financial need, and are legal citizens of the United States and plan on attending a US engineering college or university.

Matsuo Bridge Company LTD of Japan Scholarship

This scholarship is available nationwide to students looking to pursue an education in one of the following fields: civil engineering, welding engineering, welding engineering technology, or other similar fields.  Although this civil engineering scholarship is available nationwide, prospective students from California, Texas, Oregon, or Washington will be given priority.  Applicants must be 18 years of age or older, be legal residents of the United States, looking to attend or attend a US college or university, maintain a 3.0 GPA or higher, and have a valid passport and available to travel either in August or July.

Clearly Communicating Scholarships

This internship and scholarship program is offered to African Americans by T-Mobile and the United Negro College Fund.  Those selected for this program are given an opportunity to participate in a 10 to 12 week internship.  After the internship has been completed, prospective students will be evaluated to determine if they are eligible for the communications scholarship worth $4,500.  To qualify for this, students must be enrolled in a 4 year college, maintain a 2.5+ GPA, must major in accounting/financing, computer science, electrical engineering, telecommunications, human resources, or computer engineering.  Applicants from single parent households are encouraged to apply.

Army Staff Sgt. Special Agent Richard S. Eaton Jr., Scholarship

This communications scholarship was established in the memory of Special Agent Richard S. Eaton Jr., who served as a counter intelligence agent in Iraq.  In order to be eligible for this scholarship, prospective students must be pursuing a career in counter intelligence, cultural understanding, or national security studies.  This scholarship awards students $1,000.

New York Women in Communications Foundation Scholarship Program

This communications scholarship is available to high school seniors, undergraduate, and graduate school that are looking to pursue or further studies in communications.  Recipients of this scholarship are based on need, commitment to the field, and academic excellence.  Applicants must also be permanent residents of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, or Pennsylvania.  If applicants are undergraduate/graduate students who are not residents of these states but are enrolled in schools in these states are accepted.  Prospective students must also be majoring in one of these fields: advertising, broadcasting, communications, English, film, journalism, marketing, digital media, or public relations.

North Dakota State University

NDSU offers sixteen different scholarships to prospective students looking to pursue an education in a number of different fields related to communications.  These include printed media, broadcast media, journalism, human communications, and public relations.  These scholarships are available to students who excel academically, who are committed to the field, and are able to maintain a 2.5+ GPA.

Scholarships Help Nurse Tuition Aches and Pains

With so much competition for jobs recently, it is no surprise that colleges and universities are taking advantage of the “supply and demand” atmosphere by raising tuition. For example, California State University is raising its tuition prices as much as 21% this year.  This may make some people shy away from attaining higher education, but there are scholarships out there to help people make their way into the professional world.  This can make prospective students looking to pursue educations in courses such as nursing to have chance of entering into the work force.  These nursing and medical scholarships can help alleviate the costs of rising tuition.

California State University

For those with their hearts set on going to California State University, there are a number of different scholarships for nursing majors to take advantage of, 16 in total.  These scholarships include those open to all, such as the Helen Harder Memorial Scholarship, and those which are more specific, such as the Henry and Chiyo Kuwahara Memorial Scholarship which is aimed at aiding prospective student of Japanese descent.  Most of these nursing scholarships require a 3.0+ GPA and have experience with community service and/or volunteer work.

The United States Army

For those who are willing to put in some service for their country in return for a college education, applicants need to look no further than the United States Army.  This is made possible through the Army ROTC Nurse Program.  This scholarship for nursing majors requires that those who are awarded this scholarship serve at least 4 years of active service but it covers the cost of full tuition, living expenses which can be as much as $500 a month for those in their 4th year, and funds for books.  For those willing, this scholarship can eliminate the woes of tuition and provide real world experience in the field of nursing.

The American Assembly for Men in Nursing (AAMN)

Many people think that male nurses are those who could not make it through medical school, as seen Meet the Parents with Greg Focker, but that does not mean that entering this profession as a man is something to be looked down upon.  With registered nurses in high demand, the AAMN allows for men to get through school with the aid of AAMN’s scholarships for nursing majors.  The AAMN offers the Jadeh Marselis-Moore Student Nurse Essay Contest and the John Murray Student Nurse Essay Contest which awards $500 to each winner.

The American Association of Critical Care Nurses (AACN)

The AACN offers scholarships  for nursing majors who are looking to deepen and enrich their education in the field of nursing that extends beyond the academic.  To be eligible for these scholarships, applicants must assess and outline their weaknesses and how receiving the AACN nursing scholarship can help in attaining their goal of becoming a better nurse.  Applicants who are accepted for this award can receive up to $3,000 in financial aid.

Corporate America Gives a Helping Hand To Students

While growing up, there is a time when teachers begin asking kids what they want to be when they grow up.  For some, the question does not seem that important, but for others, it can help set a path to adulthood.  One of the advantages for those who know what they want to do can be utilized in the corporations of the field they decided upon.  Many large global companies, such as Google, offer company scholarship opportunities to prospective student looking to get a start in the related field.  There are a number of different corporate sponsored scholarships ranging from agricultural scholarships to engineering scholarships.

Google

The internet super mogul offers a number of different scholarships for those looking to get into the computer science field.  Google offers six different company scholarships that cover a broad spectrum of aspiring students.  These include Google AISES Scholarship for American Indians, Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship which is aimed towards women, Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship for First Years which is available to high school seniors, Google Hispanic College Fund Scholarship, Google Lime Scholarship for Students with Disabilities, and the Google United Negro College Fund Scholarship.

Ford Motor Company

For the aspiring gear heads, look no further for an engineering scholarship than Ford Motor Company.  Ford offers three company scholarships aimed at Hispanics, Native Americans, and students looking to become involved in the fields of engineering, business, and technology.  These corporate sponsored scholarships are the HSF/Ford Motor Company Scholarship for Hispanic high school graduates, the Ford Motor Company/American Indian College Fund Tribal Scholarship, and the Ford PAS.  These award between $2,500 and $5,000 to recipients.

Hy-Vee

Following their company motto of “Making lives easier, healthier, happier,” Hy-Vee offers scholarships to graduating high school students and college students.  In total Hy-Vee awards close to $80,000 a year to prospective students.  One difference that this company scholarship holds is that it does not stipulate a field a study, meaning that the money can be put towards any college or university as long as the student is enrolled full time.

GE

The GE Foundation offers scholarships to family members of current and former employees of GE.  Through a competitive program, GE awards scholarships to prospective students who display a number of qualities based on academics, volunteer work, and have involvement in the community.  These award between $500 and $3,500 depending on the level of education.  GE awards over 200 corporate sponsored scholarships to students each year.

Michigan Sugar Company

Not just delivering pleasure to people have a sweet tooth, The Michigan Sugar Company offers a number of company scholarships ranging from open ended scholarships to agricultural scholarships.  These include the Albert Flegenheimer Memorial Scholarship, The Guy Beals Memorial 4-H Scholarship, Michigan Sugar Queen Scholarship, Michigan Sugar Company Hotel Restaurant/Resort Management Scholarship, Big Chief Scholarship, the Michigan Sugar Scholarship for Honors Students, Betaseed Scholarships, and the Sygenta Scholarship.

Bettering Boston Area Education

With more than 100 colleges and universities in the Boston area, it is easy to understand why they are known as “The Athens of America.”  With a dense pool of schools, the Boston area provides numerous options for prospective students.  While it may seem that such a large selection of schools would make it easy to find a school, picking the right one may not be the most challenging hurdle. Luckily for the people of Massachusetts, there are many scholarships to choose from, ranging from education scholarships to engineering scholarships.

BNY Mellon John L. Bates Scholarship Fund

This scholarship fund is available to any student from the Boston area who is looking to major in Education.  This education scholarship can be applied to any institution in the United States.  There are a number of requirements that need to be met that include being a high school graduate from a Massachusetts school or have been a resident of the Commonwealth of Massachusetts for at least two years.  Applicants are based on academic performance, financial needs, and personal talent and ability.

First Robotics Scholarship

The First Robotics Scholarship is offered by Boston University for students looking to pursue a career in engineering.  This engineering scholarship is available to any prospective student who has been accepted to Boston University and has participated for one full season with a FIRST robotics team in high school.  This is an annually awarded half-tuition scholarship that can be renewed yearly provided that the student is full time; meaning that the student completes 12 credits a semester, and maintains a GPA of at least 3.20.  This engineering scholarship also includes funding for 10 hours of work a week doing research with a faculty member for one semester within the first two years.  In addition to this students who maintain a 3.40 GPA are entitled to gain admission to Boston University College of Engineering Master of Science program.

Massachusetts Early Childhood Educators Scholarship

This is an education scholarship was originally designed as a pilot initiative with the main goal of help in the education of those looking to work with young children.  This scholarship offers prospective students financial aid looking to enroll in early childhood education and similar fields.  In order to qualify for this scholarships applicants must be a permanent resident of Massachusetts, must be employed for one full year in a position that is licensed by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care, and must not have previously earned a bachelor’s degree.

Andrew J. Zabierek Memorial Scholarship

This scholarship is awarded to two honorably discharged serviceman/servicewoman in the New England area.  This scholarship awards up to $1,500 to be put towards an undergraduate or technical degree.  In order to qualify for this scholarship, applicants must have shown selflessness during service, provide two letters of recommendation from non-family members, proof of an honorable discharge, proof of payment and enrollment to a college/university/technical school, and s personal essay.

College Bound in California

When looking at the country as a whole, California is the reigning champion in terms of size of population. This means there is a lot of competition when it comes to finding local scholarships in California.  With a diverse population, there are a number of California college grants and scholarships designed to help different genders, ethnicities, and faiths from around the state reach their goals for higher education.

Jewish Family and Children’s Services

The JFCS offers the Jewish communities of Sonoma, Marin, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara with a number of different California college grants and schoalrships.  While they offer grants that can amount to up $6,000, they also offer scholarships that can award up to $1,500 annually for student looking to attend college, graduate school, vocational school, professional programs, and other programs in the state of California.  In order to qualify for these local scholarships in California, applicants must live in one of the five cities above, be Jewish, display financial needs, be in good standings academically, and must have proof of being accepted to a college or other accredited institution.

Nisaburo Aibara Memorial Scholarship

The Nisaburo Aibara Memorial Scholarship is available to members of the Japanese American Citizens League (JACL).  The application process includes making a personal statement, submitting letters of recommendations, providing full transcripts, have previous work experience, and shown to be an active member of the community.  Students who qualify for the Nisaburo Aibara Memorial Scholarship can be awarded up to $5,000 to put towards tuition, the minimum amount awarded being $1,000.

The Mahatma Gandhi Fellowship

This fellowship was founded in 1998 by a group of friends with the express purpose of increasing awareness on the subject of East Asia.  The foundation offers a scholarship to graduating seniors in the San Diego area.  In order to qualify for these students must submit a 2 page maximum essay on peace and non-violence, an essay on their future goals, and proof of their involvement in the community.

California State University, Bakersfield Future Scholars Program

CSUB offers 30 California college grants and scholarships annually, amounting to $1,000 to prospective students who are faced with many financial needs.  This scholarship is eligible to a number of people including those who come from low income families, students whose parents are not educated past elementary or secondary school, students with immigrant parents, rural families, families in low scoring school districts, and members of impoverished areas.  Other requirements for local scholarships in California like this one include being a California resident, graduated from a California high school, and meet CSU admission standards.

John D. Isaacs Scholarship

The John D. Isaacs Scholarship is a marine science scholarship focused on helping prospective students interested in studying marine biology reach college level studies.  This is an annually awarded scholarship which, on average, gives up to $2,500.  This scholarship is renewable yearly.  In order to qualify for this scholarship, the applicant must have entered a marine science project in a science fair, at a regional or county level, during their junior or senior year of high school.

Hit the Books in the Big Apple

There are many reasons why people go to New York.  Some go for the architecture while others go for the night life or to hit it big but the main attraction for some is the higher education scene.  New York may be expensive place to go to school, but with a number of organizations offering financial aid, it is a dream that can be a possibility.  New York scholarships are offered by organizations that offer aid for women, those of low income families, and the families of service members.

The Silver Shield Foundation

Experiencing the death of any family member can be a tragic event, but when a child loses a parent it can irrevocably alter their path, both in life and education.  The Silver Shield Foundation was established in 1982 by New York Yankees owner George Steinbrenner.  The foundation offers a grant to any New York resident who has lost a family member in the line of duty.  The application process begins when foundation is notified of the death of parent and a scholarship fund is prepared for the child.  The scholarship fund is to be used to cover costs such as tuition, room and board, and supplies.  New York scholarships foundations like this one also offer reach out programs and healthcare services.

New York Women in Communication Inc. Foundation

The New York Women in Communication Inc. Foundation offers a number of different scholarships to a number of different age groups for women.  New York scholarships from this foundation are offered to women in high school, undergraduate, and graduate school.  Recipients are chosen based on academic excellence, financial need, and if they are looking to pursue a career or education in communications.  To qualify for one of their many scholarships, applicants must be a permanent resident of New York, Connecticut, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.  Scholarships can amount to $2,000 to $10,000.

The Columbus Citizens Foundation

The Columbus Citizens Foundation offers financial aid to people of Italian heritage.  Their scholarships are available to student at a variety of different education levels which include elementary, high school, and college.  Applicants are considered based on financial need, commitment to studies, and express a desire to better the community.  Applicants who qualify are awarded multi-year scholarships that cover a number of costs including tuition.

The New York Farm Bureau Agricultural Youth Scholarship

Just because you live in the city doesn’t mean farming is not important.  For those in the state looking to pursue a career in agriculture, or a similar area of study, can apply to receive New York scholarships.  Scholarships are awarded annually and recipients are chosen through a competition.

New York State Higher Education Service Corporation

The New York State HESC offers more than 18 different scholarships and grants to students in the state looking to pursue higher education.  One such grant is the New York State HESC Tuition Assistance Program.  This program helps recipients attending in-state post-secondary institutions pay for cost that cover such things as tuition. Awards vary but can amount up to $5,000. Applicants must be US citizens, a legal resident of New York, a full time student, be a high school graduate or equivalent, and meet financial eligibility requirements.  The Tuition Assistance Program is considered a grant and therefore does not need to be paid back.

Help for Our Rising Stars

It is astounding to realize how far and fast the movie industry has advanced since 1878 when the first motion picture, The Horse in Motion, was created.  Since then, the people of the United States, as well as the world, have been enraptured by the film and TV industry.  For some, it is just a career, but for others, getting into the film industry is a dream.  These future performers come from all over the world, but the one thing that most of the great contemporary performers have in common is that they all have a strong basis in college and/or university level performing arts.  It can be an arduous journey to make your way from struggling artist to Walk of Fame honoree, but there are talent scholarships out there to make the trek a bit less stressful.

Kathleen Freeman Spirit Award

The Kathleen Freeman Spirit Award is an award presented by the Donna Reed Foundation for Performing Arts.  This particular award is given to students who are found to be exceptional performers who exhibit qualities such as a strong work ethic, commitment, passion, a willingness to help others and try anything, and possess high energy–to name a few.

Irene Ryan Acting Scholarships

This talent scholarship comes from the Irene Ryan Foundation, founded by the actress who performed as Granny Clampett from the Beverly Hillbillies.  The Irene Ryan Foundation offers 19 regional scholarships, 16 in the amount of $500 and 2 amounting to $2,500, as well as two fellowships each year.

Screen Actors Guild John L. Dales Scholarship Fund-Standard Scholarships

This scholarship is available to all of those who are members and are in good standing with the Screen Actors Guild.  Certain requirements must be met and include a requirement that the parents of the applicant have 10 years vested of pension credits or lifetime earnings of $150k+ in the guild’s jurisdiction, all high school/college/university transcripts and course evaluations, a list of extracurricular activities in the field, two personal letters of recommendations, and a 350 to 750 word essay.

The Mary Doyle Memorial Scholarship and The Sanford Meisner Merit Award

The Mary Doyle Memorial Scholarship is offered by the School for Film and Television in New York to students looking to enter this field.  This talent scholarship is awarded based on financial needs in addition to the applicant’s talent.  The scholarships awards range from $500 to $2,500, and all recipients are required to hold a 3.0 GPA or higher.  The School for Film and Television also offers the Sanford Meisner Merit Award which is granted to applicants upon a review of an audition given.

Equal Opportunity Education for Women

Though many would like to believe that people are treated equally, there are still groups who are often overlooked.  This has made it challenging for groups, such as women, to navigate their way into the career world.  Fortunately, there are many scholarships out there to help in attaining higher education.  These scholarships for women were founded with the idea that women are just as capable as men in many different areas, from computer sciences to the fine arts.

The Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship

The Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship was founded in memory of Dr. Anita Borg, affectionately nicknamed “a Technology Rebel with a Cause.”  Dr. Borg believed that all technology should be used towards the benefit of mankind rather than its determent.  This scholarship was designed to help women who are looking to pursue a career in computing and/or technology field.  Recipients who are chosen will receive financial aid for one academic year, in addition to being included in a retreat which showcases speakers, workshops, social activities, panelists, and more.

Jeanette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund

The Jeanette Rankin Women’s Scholarship Fund was established after Rankin’s death to help insure that mature women had a chance to further their social and education level in order to live better lives.  These scholarships for women are available to those with US citizenship, are over 35 years of age, come from a low-income situation, and are looking to attain a first bachelor’s degree, associate’s degree, or technical or vocational education.  The selection process is based on several areas including challenges overcome, income situation, and current and future goals.

Jane M. Klausman Women in Business Scholarships

Founded in 1998 after a generous donation by Klausman, The Jane M. Klausman Scholarship is one of the annually awarded scholarships for women.  This scholarship is aimed at women looking to further their education either at an undergraduate or master’s level.  This scholarship is only available to those looking to pursue a career in a business related field.

Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR)

DAR offers numerous scholarships for women which apply to a number of different fields of study in an effort to help women pursue higher education.  These areas of study include healthcare, nursing, political science, history, economics, and others.  Scholarships include the Enid Hall Griswold Memorial Scholarship, The Lucinda Beneventi Findley History Scholarship, Caroline E. Holt Nursing Scholarship, Mildred Nutting Nursing Scholarship, Alice W. Rooke Scholarship, and others.  These scholarships award between $1,000 and $5,000 each, some covering up to all 4 years of schooling.
